Time to share some little facts about my webcomic Sombrawood! I wanted to make a post like this after my prelude but I’m just so…lazy. Anyways, I wanted to share some small bits of info about the Universe of Sombrawood. With Sombrawood, I’m creating a world that I hope, once this is done, I will continue to use in another project of mine. What I want to share right now is some info on this worlds timeline.

This takes place when?

If you’ve noticed the corners of the chapter titles, which look like old comic covers, I have a date there. They’re not some random month and year, these indicate when the story take place. I picked the 90s as part of the setting for this story cause well, I was a kid during the 90s, simple as that really.

Indie Video Games & Webcomics….in the 90s?

So what the hell are these things doing in the 90s? Hey, it’s my own world and I can say when these things existed! Okay but really I like to give props to my friends work in my comic, since you duders inspire me big time, which is why Helvetica, Saint’s Way, Nolan & Gwen, and Ranagazu exist as comics you can find in a comic book shop in my Universe. Does that mean people like Jones exist in my comic? Yes, and Jones probably gets a lot of stupid letters in the mail that they answers in the back pages of the comic. There’s likely even things like a Helvetica stop-motion film by Henry Selick, a Nolan & Gwen Saturday morning cartoon, and maybe even a terrible movie adaption of Ranagazu by Joel Schumacher. (STARRING JIM CARREY AS JULIAN!)

Wait, people like Julian are in your comic plus Ranagazu and Nolan & Gwen

Yep, they don’t question the eerie similarity of these characters.

Okay so Super Meat Boy, Bit.Trip Runner, World of Goo, Skull Girls, and Machinarium in the 90s? And they’re huge?

Yeah. You know, a lot of these indie games are sometimes heavily influenced by video games from this era. I have a HUGE LOVE for indie games. Just look at my damn Steam page. So I wanted to make them part of my world. Games like Super Meat Boy are major hits in this alternate 90s. And I am likely going to put a lot more little references like these in the comic.

WHAT ABOUT SONIC, MARIO, AND CRASH BANDICOOT!?

Still exist. Just instead imagine Meat Boy is also on a magazine cover featuring these guys.

So how different is your timeline compared to the real 90s?

Not much. I just made little differences like this. There’s no major differences in the worlds history like “BILL CLINTON WAS NEVER PRESIDENT!” or something like that. For the most part, this is 1997 but I like to have fun. Put my own little touches in there and pay some respects to people that inspire me.

So that’s all! I’d like to share more about the world I’ve created but for that I gotta introduce you to the meaty insides of Sombrawood and that wont happen until Chapter 2. But I am up for taking questions, I guess I should do one of those world building Wednesdays sometime.
